USADA suspends Raquel Pennington for six months following self-report; ‘Rocky’ issues statement

Former UFC title challenger Raquel Pennington has been suspended for six months by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, the UFC’s official anti-doping partner.

Pennington today revealed that a suspension was forthcoming, and the agency shortly after issued a formal announcement, following a self-reported violation of the UFC’s anti-doping policy by the 32-year-old women’s bantamweight.

Pennington was found to be using the prohormone 7-keto-DHEA and the peptide AOD-9064, both of which she said were prescribed to her by a doctor to treat a medical condition. Unfortunately, both substances are prohibited at all times under the UFC’s policy.

According to USADA officials, “after using the substances for a short period of time, she conducted research and learned that they were prohibited substances and immediately came forward about her use to USADA.” While Pennington faced a potential two-year sanction, she was granted a reduced order “based on her forthright declaration prior to sample collection and for her Full and Complete Cooperation” USADA officials confirmed.

Pennington’s period of ineligibility began on Nov. 17, the date she declared the use of the substances, leaving her eligible to return in May.

Pennington (11-8 MMA, 8-5 UFC) last fought in June, picking up a decision win over Marion Reneau at UFC on ESPN 11. She currently sits at No. 8 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie women’s bantamweight rankings.

A post shared by Raquel Pennington (@raquel_pennington)

I wanted you to hear this from me first. This morning, USADA will be announcing a violation I committed of the UFC anti-doping policy. Here are the facts. I went to my physician about a medical condition I was experiencing and was prescribed several medications to treat the condition. Unfortunately, I took the medications for a brief period of time, before realizing I should have checked on their status under the program. I soon discovered that these medications may be prohibited, so I immediately stopped taking the medication and contacted the UFC to report this potential issue. I want to make it very clear that there was nothing that forced me to report this to UFC, and ultimately USADA. No one knew about this except myself and my physician and USADA had not collected a sample from me since I started the medications. This was simply me realizing a potential mistake and wanting to do the right thing. As USADA’s forthcoming statement will show, I fully cooperated with them and provided them with 100% honesty. I was not trying to cheat, skirt the rules or trying to gain a performance advantage. I was simply trying to treat a medical condition and made the mistake of not timely checking the status of these medications. I want to apologize to all of my fans and publicly make the commitment that I will be much more careful in the future and not let this happen again. I hope that I can serve as a role model in showing that we all make mistakes, but it is what you do after realizing those mistakes that define your true character. I believe that my actions shown in these events show everyone what I am made of, and while I regret making this mistake, I am proud of how I handled this and hope that you are of me as well. Thank you for your understanding and your support. #TeamRocky #BeBackInMay

Following the announcement, UFC senior vice president of athlete health and performance Jeff Novitzky took to Twitter to emphasize Pennington’s willingness to be transparent as her case was investigated, taking a quote from her statement (via Twitter):

Watch Daniel Cormier surprise Khabib Nurmagomedov with his ‘Submission of the Year’ award

Who better to award Khabib Nurmagomedov for his incredible finish at UFC 254 than his teammate Daniel Cormier?

Retired UFC lightweight champion Nurmagomedov, who scored a slick triangle choke submission of Justin Gaethje in his final outing in October, has been awarded the “UFC Honors Fan Choice Submission of the Year” award.

Surprising him with the trophy was his good friend and American Kickboxing Academy captain Cormier, who of course jokingly decided to take credit for all the jiu-jitsu classes he taught Nurmagomedov during their time training together.

A witty Nurmagomedov fired back with a hilarious response as the two exchanged words in their typical banter fashion.

Watch the hilarious clip below:

Despite UFC president Dana White trying to lure Nurmagomedov out of retirement on numerous occasions, it appears “The Eagle” still has no interest in coming back. For now, he’ll sit back and enjoy his award for 2020’s best UFC submission.

Conor McGregor returned to the Octagon after a year on the sidelines. The results were not what he had hoped.

Not only did Poirier exact his revenge, former Bellator champion Michael Chandler made a splash in his Octagon debut, announcing his arrival with a blistering knockout of Dan Hooker in the UFC 257 co-main event.

UFC title contender Raquel Pennington suspended for anti-doping violation

The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency on Thursday announced that UFC No. 4 ranked women’s bantamweight Raquel Pennington has been suspended for six months for violating the UFC Anti-Doping Policy.

Colorado Springs, Colo. (January 28, 2021) – USADA announced today that Raquel Pennington, of Colorado Springs, Colo., has accepted a six-month sanction for a violation of the UFC Anti-Doping Policy.

Pennington, 32, self-reported the use of two prohibited substances – 7-keto-DHEA and AOD-9064 – to USADA on November 17, 2020. As the result of the declaration, USADA collected an out-of-competition urine sample from Pennington, and subsequent analysis was consistent with her declared use of 7-keto-DHEA.

7-keto-DHEA (7-keto-dehydroepiandrosterone) is a non-Specified Substance in the class of Anabolic Agents and AOD-9064 is a non-Specified Substance in the class of Peptide Hormones, Growth Factors, Related Substances, and Mimetics. Both substances are prohibited at all times under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy and UFC Prohibited List.

During her self-report, Pennington provided information that she was prescribed and provided 7-keto-DHEA and AOD-9064 by a doctor to help treat a medical condition. After using the substances for a short period of time, she conducted research and learned that they were prohibited substances and immediately came forward about her use to USADA. Pennington was eligible for a reduction to the period of ineligibility based on her forthright declaration prior to sample collection and for her Full and Complete Cooperation.

Pennington’s six-month period of ineligibility began on November 17, 2020, the date she declared the use of prohibited substances and her positive sample was collected. She will be eligible to return on May 17, 2021.

TRENDING Ben Askren agrees to box YouTuber Jake Paul for more money than he’s ever been paid before

Raquel Pennington suspension follows roller coaster ride in the Octagon

Currently ranked No. 4 in the UFC women’s bantamweight division, Pennington challenged champion Amanda Nunes in May of 2018. She lost the bout.

Pennington followed with a loss to Germaine de Randamie, currently ranked No. 1 in the division, before getting back on the winning track. She defeated Irene Aldana in July of 2019.

Her success was short-lived, losing to Holly Holm in January of 2020. Pennington again rebounded when she returned in June of 2020 to defeat Marion Reneau.

The suspension means Pennington will have been on the sidelines for nearly a year before she is eligible to return in May.

Ben Askren took Jake Paul talking about his wife perfectly in stride

In case you haven’t been on Twitter, Jake Paul has the ability to really get under people’s skin just by his mere existence – but especially when he talks trash. Ben Askren, though, is the kind of guy to take it all in stride.

Case in point: During his interview with ESPN’s Ariel Helwani on Tuesday (which I hate to admit I watched the whole thing), Paul had an all-time cringey moment when he was asked why he follows only the official Triller account and Askren’s wife, Amy, on Instagram.

“She thicc, bro,” Paul said.

“She’s what?” responded Helwani.

“She’s thicc, with lke two c’s – t-h-i-c-c,” Paul repeated. “Thicc like she’s real thicc. So, I don’t know, like, I just thought she’s bad. I don’t know. I mean, maybe after I beat Ben. I don’t know.”

It was one of those moments where you feel so embarrassed for the person, and that seems to be how Askren also took it. On Wednesday, he shared the perfect response by quote-tweeting the clip, which you can check out here:

This is laugh out loud awkward!!! But yes @jakepaul I find my wife very attractive also LOL.

Bringing up significant others is Paul’s thing apparently. He also invoked Conor McGregor’s fiancee, Dee Devlin, in one of his recent trash-talking videos by insulting her looks – which was just cheap and childish, but whatever. This is what you can expect.

Stuff like this is bound to ramp up as we get closer to April 17, when Paul and Askren fight in an eight-round boxing match. Brace yourself.
