When it comes to discussing potential opponents, Ciryl Gane stands true to his catchphrase of “anyone, anywhere,” but he admits there is one particular matchup that makes sense.

Gane (7-0 MMA, 4-0- UFC) cracked the heavyweight top 10 when he finished former champion Junior Dos Santos in the second round of their bout at UFC 256 and has looked near flawless since joining the UFC roster in 2019.

Though it’s been a fast rise for the undefeated Frenchman, Gane is ready to take on the division’s best. The only unbooked heavyweight that sits ahead of him in the rankings is Jairzinho Rozenstruik (11-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC), who is also coming off a second-round finish of Dos Santos.

Looking at the heavyweight landscape, Gane is certainly open to that matchup.

“This makes sense,” Gane told MMA Junkie. “He is not booked, so we tried to do it for January if I’m not mistaken, but with Christmas he needs time, so we’ll see. I don’t know when exactly, but I think it’s gonna be that guy.”

He continued, “There aren’t that many people above me. There are fights already booked and Rozenstruik isn’t, so I think it’s probably with this guy. But if you ask me who I want – anyone. I’m on my way, so let’s go.”

Gane, who scored three big wins in an active 2019, saw his momentum slowed somewhat in 2020 when he was forced to undergo surgery for a collapsed lung. He then saw four fights scrapped before finally getting to compete in the final month of the year.

Despite his 2020 setbacks, Gane finds himself in a great position to kick off 2021 and is looking to return in the first quarter of the new year.

“I’m really close to the top, and I feel good,” he said. “I’m on my way, and I’m confident. So yes, I want to fight and maybe in March because I think for Abu Dhabi it’s a little bit hard to book me, so maybe in March. I’m ready. I’m on my way, and I want to fight because I’m really close (to the top).”

The UFC never has been shy about trying to deliver fireworks.

Traditionally, the promotion has liked to close out the calendar year with a bang. (Although a few years, the way the dates fell, it meant starting the new year with one, instead.) But the point is, a big pay-per-view always was something fans could look forward to around the holidays.

The past couple years, the UFC has shifted away from those, and the final pay-per-view of the year has been in the middle of December. But we still have memories of those big blowout events from the past.

Disclaimer: Like all lists, these things are subjective. Maybe Robbie Lawler vs. Carlos Condit was a truly great and competitive fight, but Amanda Nunes vs. Ronda Rousey was far from competitive and just a mauling. When we say “best fights,” we also mean best moments, so don’t get too hung up on Monday morning quarterbacking. Just enjoy the look-back.

U.K. promotion Cage Warriors is set to return in 2021 with another “Trilogy” of fight nights in London, and the three-night run will also feature the return of fans.

Cage Warriors 120, 121 and 122 will take place on March 18, 19 and 20, respectively, at the York Hall in Bethnal Green, and will see the promotion welcome back fans to their events for the first time since the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The live Cage Warriors atmosphere is like nothing else,” said Cage Warriors president Graham Boylan, via press release.

“We’ve been able to pull off some incredible cards behind-closed-doors, but we’re under no illusion that our fans are an essential part of the Cage Warriors experience, and we’ve missed them. We’ve been working around the clock to make sure we’ll have everything in place to host fans back in March, so this is a special announcement for us.”

The promotion successfully operated within a bubble environment during the pandemic, with the promotion moving their planned March 7 event, Cage Warriors 112, from London to Manchester after the original venue, the Indigo at The O2, was shut down due to COVID-19.

As the COVID lockdown expanded across the whole of England, the promotion was able to establish a behind-closed-doors setup at the BEC Arena and, after their March 20 event went off without a hitch, the promotion ran a three-night behind-closed-doors “Trilogy” series at the venue from Sep. 25-27 for Cage Warriors 114, 115 and 116.

Cage Warriors then returned to London for a second “Trilogy” series, with three events taking place at the York Hall from Dec. 10-12. Now the promotion is set to return to the capital for its third triple-header, and Cage Warriors president Graham Boylan is set to open the doors to fans once again.

“The live Cage Warriors atmosphere is like nothing else,” he said, via press release.

“We’ve been able to pull off some incredible cards behind-closed-doors, but we’re under no illusion that our fans are an essential part of the Cage Warriors experience, and we’ve missed them. When the world came to a standstill because of the global coronavirus pandemic, there were very few people that stood up and said they simply refused to accept it.

UFC president Dana White is quite famous for disregarding what people tell him can’t be done, and that was never more evident than during the pandemic.

Though the UFC had to cancel a handful of events, White was willing to move away from government sanctioning to hold events on Native American reservations when government bodies refused to support his efforts.

It was most certainly one of the most renegade moves White had ever made. For years, the UFC sought regulation, but White felt more strongly that he needed to keep his organization operational.

There was no shortage of critics. Pundits from across the spectrum took shots at White, claiming it was foolhardy. There was no way White and the UFC would emerge unscathed from such wreckless behavior.

As 2020 comes to a close, the UFC might not have emerged unscathed, but it certainly hasn’t fallen to the condemnation that was leveled in the early days of White’s efforts to keep his sport moving forward.

The UFC has held a regular slate of events since it rekindled the sports world with UFC 249 on May 9, 2020. There have been numerous fighters and cornerman, as well as UFC staffers, that have contracted COVID-19, the disease cause by the coronavirus.

That said, thus far, there have been no superspreader events or deaths attributed to the UFC’s operations.

In fact, the UFC’s handling of COVID-19 has been a blueprint for many other sports and businesses to safely operate.

Things have gone so well that White claims the promotion is having one of its most successful years ever, all amidst that pandemic.

In a video White released on Monday, there is a heavy does of firing back at members of the media, many of whom are put front and center alongside their criticisms in the video.

As White resolves to continue pushing forward in 2021, he’s not letting his critics fade away quietly into the darkness of 2020.
