MMA Junkie’s ‘Submission of the Month’ for December: A rarely seen banana split

With another action-packed month of MMA in the books, MMA Junkie looks at the best submissions from December 2020: Here are the four nominees, listed in chronological order, and winner of MMA Junkie’s “Submission of the Month” award for December.

At the bottom of the post, let us know if we got it right by voting for your choice.

Jose Perez def. Jacob Dorman at CFFC 91

Jose Perez (2-0) provided a highlight to remember for his early career resume against Jacob Dorman (1-4) in their featherweight matchup.

In the opening round of the contest, Perez secured position over Dorman on the mat. From there, he started twisting his opponent in the direction he needed for the banana split. Dorman was in clear agony as his groin was extended, and he had no choice but to tap out.

Patrick Sabatini def. Jesse Stirn at CFFC 91

Patrick Sabatini (13-3) tapped out fellow regional veteran Jesse Stirn (10-4) to become the new CFFC featherweight champion.

After a dominant first round, Sabatini dragged Stirn to the ground in Round 2. From there, he worked his way up to an armbar, pulled guard, and locked in a torque that was too tight for Stirn to handle. Sabatini picked up another submission win and, with it, title gold.

Jimmy Flick def. Cody Durden at UFC Fight Night 183

Jimmy Flick (16-5 MMA, 1-0 UFC) octagon debut wasn’t going so great at the start when opponent Cody Durden (11-3-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) was having his way in the standup game.

Flick threw a head kick. Durden caught it. And before anyone knew what happened, Flick threw his right leg up, pulled guard, and had Durden caught in a triangle choke by the time they hit the mat. Durden tried to escape, but was trapped, and tapped out for the memorable submission win.

Ayaka Hamasaki def. Miyuu Yamamoto at Rizin FF 26

Ayaka Hamasaki (21-3) took on three-time wrestling world champion Miyuu Yamamoto (6-5), and utilized a newly-acquired technique to capture the vacant atomweight title and become a two-time champion.

Yamamoto managed to get the action to the canvas early with a well-executed takedown, but Hamasaki threatened with a Kimura attempt before reversing position and ending up on top.Once there, Hamasaki continued to attack the arm, but while Yamamoto battled her the armbar, Hamasaki surprised her opponent with a scissor choke that forced the tap.

The winner: Jose Perez

This one just hurt to watch.

Perez’s sophomore professional outing memorable when he defeated Dorman by – the rare but always wince-inducing – banana split submission.

The fight hit the mat and as the fighters tangled up, Perez grabbed hold of Dorman’s left leg. From there, it didn’t take long for Perez to obtain the proper level of torque to get the tap from Dorman, whose torso and legs were tweaked in an improper direction.

Even after Perez released the submission, Dorman writhed in pain on the ground – as if losing a fight isn’t bad enough.

It was a thing of beauty, though, and although it didn’t come at the highest level of the sport, it was worthy of recognition as the “Submission of the Month” in December.

UFC’s Derek Brunson says he holds all the aces ahead of Kevin Holland bout

Derek Brunson will look to derail another hype train when he faces one of sport’s biggest rising stars.

After bouncing Edmen Shahbazyan out of the ranks of the unbeaten in August, Brunson (21-7 MMA, 12-5 UFC) will headline UFC Fight Night on March 20 when he takes on Kevin Holland.

Brunson has competed against a who’s who of the UFC’s middleweight class, but has found motivation in taking on the young guns of the division. Holland may have had an incredible 2020 – including a knockout over Ronaldo Souza – but Brunson expects to have the advantage over him on fight night.

“I see myself just putting it on Holland,” Brunson told Mike Swick on the “Real Quick” podcast. “I don’t really see any one place that he’s better than me. His cardio is not better than mine, his wrestling isn’t better than mine, his striking isn’t better than mine, his BJJ isn’t better than mine.”

The pair share a prior history, as Brunson explains that he tried to recruit Holland (21-5 MMA, 8-2 UFC) as a training partner when he was preparing to face Israel Adesanya at UFC 230 in November 2018. He claims that a young Holland went from showering him with praise to calling him out on numerous occasions just a couple of years later.

“He’s been calling me out for the past three fights,” Brunson said. “And it’s funny, because I was gonna fly him in to train with me for Izzy and I think at this point I was like, ‘Man, you look good out there, good job.’ He was like, ‘Oh man, it’s just a blessing. It’s such an honor to have a UFC guy talking to me,’ and then he went from that to calling me out, so I’m all about it.”

21 fights on our MMA wishlist for 2021

LAS VEGAS, NV – NOVEMBER 21: in their women’s flyweight championship bout during the UFC 255 event at UFC APEX on November 21, 2020 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images)

The UFC women’s flyweight division has lacked competition, and that’s not because there aren’t skilled contenders, but because the champion, Valentina Shevchenko, is just simply a historic talent.

Got to admit, things in the last years haven’t been too exciting in the women’s 125-pound rankings, but I feel like that’s starting to change.

For one, Shevchenko looked to have some issues in the wrestling department against Jennifer Maia; granted she was coming back from a major knee injury.

And secondly, the multi-weight-class beast Jessica Andrade is now vouching for a title shot in the division. Andrade’s power is a threat to any fighter, and so is her strong wrestling and ground-and-pound.

On paper, I find Andrade to be the most interesting challenge of Shevchenko’s title reign.

Montana De La Rosa vs. Mayra Bueno Silva added to UFC Fight Night on Feb. 27

A women’s flyweight bout is the latest addition to the UFC’s Feb. 27 event.

Montana De La Rosa (11-6 MMA, 4-2 UFC) will face Mayra Bueno Silva (7-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) in an event that does not yet have a formally announced location, but is expected to take place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Both fighters confirmed the matchup on their social media accounts after an initial report from MMA Fighting.

After winning her first three UFC fights, De La Rosa has lost two of her past three. “The Ultimate Fighter” alum is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Viviane Araujo at UFC on ESPN+ 34 in September.

Silva punched her ticket to the UFC with a first-round submission of Mayana Souza at a Dana White’s Contender Series event in 2018. Since then, she’s won two of her past three and most recently scored a first-round armbar of Mara Romero Borella at UFC on ESPN+ 36 in September.

With the addition to the card, the Feb. 27 lineup now includes:

  • Dominick Reyes vs. Jiri Prochazka
  • Raphael Assuncao vs. Raoni Barcelos
  • William Knight vs. Alonzo Menifield
  • Alexis Davis vs. Sabina Mazo
  • Randy Brown vs. Alex Oliveira
  • Hannah Cifers vs. Emily Whitmire
  • Alex Caceres vs. Kevin Croom
  • Mayra Bueno Silva vs. Montana De La Rosa

Michael Chiesa vs. Neil Magny elevated to UFC Fight Island 8 main event

It appears that Leon Edwards will not remain on the UFC Fight Island 8 card after Khamzat Chimaev dropped out of the bout. A welterweight bout between Michael Chiesa and Neil Magny will instead be elevated to main event status.

Edwards vs. Chimaev was initially expected to headline UFC Vegas 17 on Dec. 19. The bout was canceled after Edwards and then Chimaev each contracted COVID-19.

The fight was rescheduled for a special midweek Jan. 20 UFC Fight Night in Abu Dhabi. It was again canceled after Chimaev had to withdraw because of lingering complications from COVID-19.

Magny offered to step in when Chimaev fell out of the headliner and Edwards publicly stated that he wanted to remain on the fight card. UFC officials instead opted to elevate Chiesa vs. Magny to the headlining bout with plans to try and rebook Edwards vs. Chimaev at a later date.

UFC Fight Island 8 is the second of a three-event stint that will take place over the course of eight days. The weeklong run represents the third time that the UFC will utilize Fight Island in Abu Dhabi.
