Amanda Nunes vs. Megan Anderson rebooked for UFC 259

The UFC women’s featherweight title fight between champion Amanda Nunes and challenger Megan Anderson has been rebooked for UFC 259 on March 6, according to UFC broadcast partner ESPN.

Nunes originally planned to put her 145-pound title on the line against Anderson at UFC 256 on Dec. 12, the promotion’s final pay-per-view of 2020. The bout was initially supposed to be part of a three-championship-bout tripleheader alongside Kamaru Usman defending his welterweight belt against Gilbert Burns and bantamweight champ Petr Yan facing Aljamain Sterling.

Usman withdrew because he wasn’t physically ready. Nunes followed a short time later, withdrawing because of an undisclosed injury in early November.

The Yan vs. Sterling bout slipped through the cracks as well, leaving UFC 256 to be headlined by flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo vs. Brandon Moreno, both of whom made a quick return after having won separate bouts at UFC 255 three weeks earlier.

Nunes is currently on an 11-bout winning streak, which includes winning and defending the women’s bantamweight and featherweight championships. She most recently fought in June, when she dominated Felicia Spencer en route to a unanimous-decision victory.

On Sept. 24, Nunes and wife Nina Ansaroff, also a UFC fighter, welcomed the arrival of their first child, Raegan Ann Nunes.

Having vacated the Invicta FC featherweight championship to join the UFC ranks in 2018, Anderson has faced a rocky road in the Octagon.

She lost to Holly Holm in her UFC debut, rebounded with a win over Cat Zingano in her next bout, but lost to Spencer in her third trip to the cage. Anderson enters the fight with Nunes on the heels of back-to-back victories over Zarah Fairn Dos Santos and Norma Dumont Viana.

Nina Ansaroff vs. Mackenzie Dern expected in April

Ansaroff is expected to fight for the first time since giving birth to Raegan in September, when she squares off with Mackenzie Dern on April 10. The bout hasn’t been signed, but has reportedly been agreed to, according to ESPN‘s sources.

Geoff Neal overcame adversity (including losing 3 corners to COVID) in UFC Vegas 17 loss

Geoff Neal may have wound up on the wrong end of a decision in his UFC Vegas 17 headliner opposite Stephen Thompson on Saturday night, but he was proud of just having been able to compete none the less.

Thompson dominated the fight, earning 50-45 scores from all three judges, but that didn’t deter Neal’s resolve.

Neal says he lost three cornermen, including his main corner, to COVID-19 en route to the fight. He also admitted to not being about to see out of his left eye for the vast majority of the bout.

Neal insists he wasn’t making excuses, just relaying the adversity that he had to overcome simply to fight. He still gave credit to Thompson for being “good as f—.”

“I want to take the time to thank all my supporters and friends. I haven’t replied to everyone but just know I love y’all! Not the outcome I wanted but I had fun nonetheless. Some much adversity dealing leading up to this fight.. sepsis, congestive heart failure, 3 of my corners testing positive for covid, with one of them being the general @sayifsaud, but I still made that walk and fought that fight. Couldn’t see out of my right eye for 4 rounds and still managed to hang in there with a guy whose been kicking ass since I was like 9yrs old lol. I don’t know about y’all but I’m proud of me! Shoutout to my teammates and coaches who did everything to get me ready for this moment. And big shout out to @wonderboymma. True definition of a martial artist. Never stop being you my man. And tell your pops I said thanks for the water 😂👊🏾

P.S this is not an excuse @wonderboymma is good af lol”

Michel Pereira wants Anthony Pettis next, but will Pettis still be in the UFC?

LAS VEGAS – Michel Pereira beat Khaos Williams with a unanimous decision Saturday on the main card at UFC Fight Night 183 in Las Vegas.

Take a look inside the fight with Pereira, who picked up his first decision win in a little more than three years and called out a new free agent who also got a big win at the event.

Michel Pereira vs. Khaos Williams

Result: Michel Pereira def. Khaos Williams via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
Updated records: Pereira (25-11 MMA, 3-2 UFC), Williams (11-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC)
Key stat: Williams won a close striking battle 62-56, but Pereira landed a pair of key takedowns.

Pereira on the fight’s key moment

“I tried to stay safe because I thought my opponent was going to come forward more. He was waiting too much to try and get the perfect punch. So I tried to be more technical and go with the strategy to make sure I would win and not give him a lot of space to capitalize on my errors. If I made a mistake, he would probably capitalize on it.”

Pereira on his game plan

“I came into this fight with a strategy. I knew my opponent was very dangerous, so I tried to come with a better strategy. I knew I was winning, so I tried to keep the pace to get the ‘W.’”

Pereira on what he wants next

Holiday countdown: The UFC’s 24 best year-end fights of all time, ranked – with first Jones-Cormier bout

The UFC never has been shy about trying to deliver fireworks.

Traditionally, the promotion has liked to close out the calendar year with a bang. (Although a few years, the way the dates fell, it meant starting the new year with one, instead.) But the point is, a big pay-per-view always was something fans could look forward to around the holidays.

The past couple years, the UFC has shifted away from those, and the final pay-per-view of the year has been in the middle of December. But we still have memories of those big blowout events from the past.

In the spirit of the holiday season, this year we’re giving you our countdown of the best fights from the UFC’s past year-end pay-per-views. Each day, come back here and open the proverbial door to find out which fight is next on the list.

Disclaimer: Like all lists, these things are subjective. Maybe Robbie Lawler vs. Carlos Condit was a truly great and competitive fight, but Amanda Nunes vs. Ronda Rousey was far from competitive and just a mauling. When we say “best fights,” we also mean best moments, so don’t get too hung up on Monday morning quarterbacking. Just enjoy the look-back.

Christos Giagos grateful for UFC Fight Night 183 shot – on three days’ notice

LAS VEGAS – Christos Giagos beat Carlton Minus with a unanimous decision Saturday to open up the preliminary card at UFC Fight Night 183 in Las Vegas.

Take a look inside the fight with Giagos, who got back in the win column with his first victory in more than 18 months.

Christos Giagos vs. Carlton Minus

Result: Christos Giagos def. Carlton Minus via unanimous decision (30-26, 29-27, 29-28)
Updated records: Giagos (18-8 MMA, 4-4 UFC), Minus (10-3 MMA, 0-2 UFC)
Key stat: Giagos outstruck Minus 76-29 and landed five takedowns.

Giagos on the fight’s key moment

“I knew his ground game wasn’t up to par with mine. I definitely thought I could strike with him, but I didn’t want to play his game. Mentally, I just wanted to take it to the ground. Doing that, my arms kind of gassed out early. He hit me with a jab and I couldn’t really see out of my left eye early on. So I just kept taking him down. I just went back to my wrestling.

“His hits weren’t really hurting me and I didn’t feel the pressure too much. I just didn’t want to give him what he wanted. I’m just happy I went out there and got the ‘W.’ I’m not totally happy with my performance. I wanted to get the submission victory. I wanted to stay safe and not give him anything.”

Giagos on his short-notice opportunity

“I just wanted to fight one time this year because I haven’t fought since last August. I really wanted to fight this year. I thought I wasn’t going to. I just accepted the fact I wasn’t going to fight, and then my manager called me three days ago and he goes, ‘Hey, an opportunity came up.’ I loved the matchup. I got the victory.”

Giagos on what he wants next
