Bellator signs Darina Madzyuk, woman who finished 529-pound man in viral video

All it took was Darina Madzyuk finishing a 529-pound with strikes to get her into a major MMA promotion.

The victor of one of the most viral videos of 2020, Madzyuk (3-1 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) has signed a multifight contract with Bellator, a promotion official informed MMA Junkie on Tuesday.

The signing was first reported by Barstool Sports.

Madzyuk, who weighed in at 139 pounds for the openweight fight, competed against Grigory Christyakov, a 529-pound male, in Russia. Less than halfway through the opening three-minute round, Madzyuk finished Christyakov with a barrage of punches after getting the fight to the mat. The video blew up on social media, extending outside the MMA news bubble.

Besides the viral mismatch win, Madzyuk, 28, has compiled a 3-1 professional record. Madzyuk has competed at openweight, lightweight, featherweight, and bantamweight. She rides a two-fight winning streak and holds one TKO victory in three wins.

Bellator has not revealed plans for her debut at this time.

John McCarthy: Point deduction in Deiveson Figueiredo vs. Brandon Moreno right call at UFC 256

Former referee John McCarthy thinks Jason Herzog made the correct decision to take a point from Deiveson Figueiredo in the UFC 256 headliner.

This past Saturday’s fight between flyweight champion Figueiredo (20-1-1 MMA, 9-1-1 UFC) and Brandon Moreno was ruled a majority draw. The point deduction by Herzog was a deciding factor.

A lot was made of Herzog’s decision to take a point from Figueiredo, who was penalized after striking Moreno (18-5-2 MMA, 6-2-2 UFC) with a low blow that had him visibly hurt and coughing. Figueiredo was issued no prior warning, but McCarthy explained the impact of the blow has to factor in.

“That point deduction is absolutely the way it’s supposed to be done,” McCarthy said on his “Weighing In podcast.” “A lot of people say, ‘That was the first groin strike.’ It doesn’t matter. Did it alter Brandon Moreno and make it to where Figueiredo actually had an advantage based upon a foul? Yeah. You want to get kicked in the nuts? We’ll give you a point.

“It sucks, and so when he takes the point, what he’s doing is he’s trying to even that playing field back out. Figueiredo has got an advantage doing something that was illegal. I’m going to try evening it out. My only way of evening this out in this situation is to take a point. It’s what he did, and it was the right call.”

One judge scored the fight in favor of Figueiredo. The other two judges scored the fight a draw. Figueiredo retained the title, but the pair, who put on a “Fight of the Year” contender, are expected to rematch at some point next year.

Tito Ortiz’s tenure as a city council member already is a train wreck

Here at the Blue Corner, we don’t pay much attention to Tito Ortiz because, quite frankly, he’s just not worth the time.

Ortiz is a UFC Hall of Famer and one of the most important figures in the history of mixed martial arts, no doubt. But these days, he’s become known more for being a Trump-loving, COVID-denying buffoon you just can’t take seriously.

That said, it couldn’t be ignored last month when Ortiz was elected to city council in his Southern California hometown of Huntington Beach after a campaign in which he amplified right-wing conspiracy theories constantly over his social media. With three seats open on the seven-seat council, Ortiz received the most votes in a field of 15 candidates. As such, the “Huntington Beach Bad Boy” is now mayor pro tempore of the city after being sworn in last week – LOL.

So how are things going? What kind of start is Ortiz off to? Everyone’s favorite person on Twitter, Borrachinha Depot, has been keeping tabs. And, well, Ortiz’s tenure is already the train wreck you’d expect with his incompetence on full display.

December 7: Here’s Tito struggling to repeat his oath.

December 7: Here’s Tito joking about COVID-19 as a “plan-demic.”

December 7: Here’s Tito just saying stuff to sound smart but failing.

December 10: Tito is nowhere to be found for his first council meeting.

December 11: SoCal native Jim Rome roasts the sh*t out of Tito on his national radio show.

December 12: Here’s Tito with some fearmongering, one of his specialties.

December 13: Here are some slightly troubling allegations made against Tito.

So, to recap Ortiz’s first week in office: a botched swearing in, COVID jokes, gibberish, fearmongering, and maybe a hit-and-run.

Let’s all pray for the good people of Huntington Beach.

The Blue Corner is MMA Junkie’s blog space. We don’t take it overly serious, and neither should you. If you come complaining to us that something you read here is not hard-hitting news, expect to have the previous sentence repeated in ALL CAPS.

Nate Diaz rips Jake Paul for profane Conor McGregor callout

YouTuber Jake Paul’s two professional boxing victories have emboldened him to try and follow in his brother’s footsteps to get a marque celebrity match-up with UFC fighter Conor McGregor. Perhaps a bit surprisingly, McGregor rival Nate Diaz ripped on Paul for his callout the Irishman.

Jake’s brother Logan Paul recently inked a deal for an exhibition bout with Floyd Mayweather. Jake wants the same type of star boosting, big money deal with McGregor, claiming in a profanity filled callout of McGregor that his team offered McGregor and the UFC $50 million for a bout.

McGregor has given little attention to Paul, but Diaz was quick to jump in after Paul’s callout video got him worked up.

Jake Paul’s profane Conor McGregor callout

(Warning: Strong Language)

Diaz shot out a warning to Jake, whose two professional boxing victories have come opposite a fellow internet celebrity and a former NBA star who trained for a few months for his first fight, the loss to Paul.

After Diaz’s warning, Jake then taunted Diaz.

Diaz responded in kind, telling Logan to put his little brother back in line.

Will any of this ever go anywhere?

Probably not. Logan was able to pull of an exhibition bout with Mayweather, and Jake has a couple of bouts under his belt, but no athletic commission worth its salt would sanction a full-on professional bout – boxing or mixed martial arts – between either of the Paul brothers and a fighter with the experience of McGregor or Diaz.

That probably won’t stop either of the Paul brothers from doing what they are good at, which is being famous for being famous.

Video: YouTuber Jake Paul attacks Conor McGregor teammate Dillon Danis on the street

YouTube sensation Jake Paul continued to escalate his feud with Conor McGregor and his teammates on Tuesday with a drive-by attack on Dillon Danis.

Danis is a teammate of McGregor’s, who fights for Bellator MMA. He was famously attacked by Khabib Nurmagomedov after the UFC lightweight champion submitted McGregor at UFC 229.

Paul has two professional boxing victories to his credit, a win over a fellow YouTuber and a win over former NBA star Nate Robinson, who had two to three months of training for the bout.

Surrounding his bout with Robinson, Paul was calling out McGregor. After the fight, he said it was his life’s mission not only to fight McGregor, but to defeat him.

Of course, Paul thus far is most famous for being famous… on YouTube, where he has 20.3 million subscribers. He is now gathering steam on Instagram (14.2 million followers) and Twitter (3.8 million followers), expanding his horizons.

Paul posted a profanity laden video callout of McGregor on Instagram, which garnered a response not from the Irishman, but from McGregor’s rival Nate Diaz.

Having found such attention for that stunt, he went after Danis. Paul and his crew, including video camera, road in the bed of a pick-up truck and launched what appears to be water balloons at Danis, all the while again tossing profanities in his direction.

Thus far no one has shown much of a professional interest in Paul’s antics, with UFC president Dana White notably brushing him aside, saying there is “zero chance” that he ever gets a fight with McGregor.

Paul, however, is making the most of his moment in the sun, garnering attention for hurling insults, and now projectiles, as if he just stepped out of a junior high classroom.
